Gingerbread in American Cooking

December 14, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Brown Bag Lunch Series

FREE program – just in time for the holidays!

Please join us to learn about the history of gingerbread in America from Hannah Elder, Associate Reference Librarian at Massachusetts Historical Society. Hannah will explore the history of gingerbread here in the US, including an overview of the foodways of European colonists, a close look at how American gingerbread was adapted from European recipes, and a discussion of how to make gingerbread. As a special treat, samples of gingerbread made using Amelia Simmons’ famous 1796 recipe for “Soft Gingerbread to be baked in pans” will be available to try for yourselves!

About the Brown Bag Lunch Series

Join us on the third Thursday of the month with your favorite lunch and explores local history and culture in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Beverages and dessert will be provided by the museum.  This is a free community program and we are asking those who are able to consider a $10 donation to the Wenham Museum to attend.  You may still attend this program without a donation.  Thank you!
