SUMMARY:Induction into Vietnam - An Airman's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome David A. Mangan\, Veteran Service Officer from the Town of Wakefield\, Massachusetts.  Mr. Mangan served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1969 – 1970. \nDrafted right out of high school in 1968\, he enlisted in the Air Force due to his prior involvement with the Civil Air Patrol.  This experience allowed him to direct his team in Vietnam to successful missions. \nAs a Jet aircraft mechanic specialist on the F-105 Thunderchief\, Mr. Mangan performed maintenance as a crew chief on three aircraft that were nuclear strike bombers during the Vietnam War from a remote base along the Cambodian Border in Thailand and in the central highlands of Thailand. \nHe was promoted rapidly to staff sergeant at the age of 19 and he was responsible for turning aircraft around for missions within 12 hours. The combat support from Thailand was Secret and virtually unknown to the American theatre. The United States lost over 325 F-105 aircraft from Thailand alone\, and the majority of the prisoners from downed aircraft were pilots from these bases. \nMr. Mangan will share his personal experiences of the Vietnam War and share personal photos from his service during his presentation.  He dedicates his presentation to his best friend\, Michael Guzzetti\, a U.S. Marine who was killed just a few weeks after his arrival at Quang Nam province while on patrol in Vietnam. \nToday\, Mr. Mangan is active in providing navigational direction for Veteran Benefits for Veterans from WWII to Afghanistan.  To read Mr. Mangan’s complete bio\, please click here >> \nTickets\n$20 Nonmembers\n$15 Members\, Seniors (65+)\, Military & Veterans \nParking & Accessibility\nPublic parking is available in gravel lot located next to the Homestead. There is an incline to walk from the parking lot to the Homestead. We regret that at this time\, the Archives and the Homestead are not fully handicapped accessible. SUMMARY:NEW EXHIBIT: Pysanky for Peace
DESCRIPTION:The museum’s newest exhibition\, Pysanky for Peace\, opens on this date in the Egbert Gallery. \nAbout the Exhibit\nOne legend of the Ukrainian people living in the Carpathian Mountains tells us that pysanky (elaborately decorated Easter eggs) must be created each year. If they aren’t\, the chains that hold evil in check will loosen\, and it will be free to wander\, causing havoc in the world. As long as enough pysanky are made\, the chains will tighten and good will triumph for another year. \nThe Wenham Museum’s exhibit features 50 of these wonderfully decorated eggs\, hand-made by artisans from around the world\, in support of the Pysanky for Peace Project\, which aims to raise funds to aid the ongoing humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. In lieu of an exhibit fee for this traveling display\, the museum has made a donation to the non-profit organization Razom (which means “together” in Ukrainian)\, which is supplying critically needed medical supplies to the people of Ukraine. \nWe are doing what we can to support those suffering in this crisis. If you are able\, please donate to Razom by going directly to their website. You will also find a donation box in the exhibit gallery (the museum will ensure that the funds go to Razom). \nYou can learn more about the Pysanky for Peace Project online. \n

SUMMARY:The Green Box by Jim Kurtz
DESCRIPTION:Seventy years ago\, soldiers who survived World War II returned home to pick up the pieces of their lives. Second Lieutenant Robert Kurtz was one of these men. Fewer than ten years later\, he died unexpectedly\, leaving behind a wife and four young sons. The youngest\, Jim\, would have no memories of his father\, and it left a huge gap in his life\, compelling him to search for the identity of the man he only knew from a few family pictures and overheard family conversations. It would take him more than fifty years to learn essential details about this devoted father and husband…and unexpected hero. \nThe resulting narrative is a unique blend of memoir and biography. Jim Kurtz weaves together his search with an emerging picture of his father’s life\, vividly telling a story that is war chronicle\, romance\, mystery\, and personal reflection. And it all started when an eight-year old boy climbed some attic stairs to open a forbidden green box. \nThe program will take place at the Wenham Museum’s Patton Family Archives located in the Patton Homestead\, 650 Asbury Street\, Hamilton\, Mass.  Signed books will be available for purchase. \nTickets\n$20 Nonmembers\n$15 Members\, Seniors (65+)\, Military & Veterans \nParking & Accessibility\nPublic parking is available in gravel lot located next to the Homestead. There is an incline to walk from the parking lot to the Homestead. We regret that at this time\, the Archives and the Homestead are not fully handicapped accessible. Restrooms are available within the Homestead.
