SUMMARY:Author Talk with Katherine Howe
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon Enrichment for Adults: Author Talk with NYT bestselling author Katherine Howe\n\nJoin New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe for a lively conversation about her latest novel\, A True Account: Hannah Masury’s Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates\, Written by Herself. Blending historical research with page-turning adventure\, the novel follows a young woman who disguises herself as a cabin boy and joins a pirate crew in search of freedom and fortune during the Golden Age of Piracy. Howe will discuss the history behind the story and the art of bringing the past to life through fiction. \nAbout the Book:\nFrom New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe comes a daring first-hand account of one young woman’s unbelievable adventure as one of the most terrifying sea rovers of all time. \nIn Boston\, as the Golden Age of Piracy comes to a bloody close\, Hannah Masury – bound out to service at a waterfront inn since childhood – is ready to take her life into her own hands. When a man is hanged for piracy in the town square and whispers of a treasure in the Caribbean spread\, Hannah is forced to flee for her life\, disguising herself as a cabin boy in the pitiless crew of the notorious pirate Edward “Ned” Low. To earn the freedom to choose a path for herself\, Hannah must hunt down the treasure and change the tides. \nMeanwhile\, professor Marian Beresford pieces Hannah’s story together in 1930\, seeing her own lack of freedom reflected back at her as she watches Hannah’s transformation. At the center of Hannah Masury’s account\, however\, lies a centuries-old mystery that Marian is determined to solve\, just as Hannah may have been determined to take it to her grave. \nA True Account tells the unforgettable story of two women in different worlds\, both shattering the rules of their own society and daring to risk everything to go out on their own account. \nAbout Katherine Howe:\nKatherine Howe is a New York Times bestselling and award-winning historian and novelist. She is the author of several novels for adults and young adults\, has edited two volumes of primary sources for Penguin Classics\, and is the co-author with Anderson Cooper of the #1 New York Times bestselling books VANDERBILT and ASTOR.  \nKatherine has appeared on “Good Morning America\,” “CBS This Morning\,” NPR’s “Weekend Edition\,” the BBC\, the History Channel\, Smithsonian TV\, the Travel Channel\, and she hosted “Salem: Unmasking the Devil” for National Geographic. Her fiction has been translated into over twenty languages. She holds a BA in art history and philosophy from Columbia and an MA in American and New England studies from Boston University. A native Houstonian and avid sailor\, she lives in New England with her family\, where she is at work on her next book. (Headshot credit: Beowulf Sheehan) \n Afternoon Enrichment Series • Included with general museum admission • Ages: Adults • Registration not required

SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad in Essex County
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon Enrichment for Adults:\nThe underground railroad in essex county\n\nJoin historian Gordon Harris for a fascinating look at the Underground Railroad in Essex County\, MA. \nIn the 19th century\, a secret network helping those escaping slavery\, known as the Underground Railroad\, ran north along the coast from Boston through Lynn and Marblehead to Salem\, where it split into three trails: One through Danvers\, Andover\, Lawrence\, and across the New Hampshire line; another by way of Danvers\, Georgetown\, and Haverhill. The third route went through Beverly\, where Dr. Ingalls Kittredge tirelessly managed the transportation of fugitives. \nFrom Beverly\, the freedom seekers were transported to the zealous anti-slavery workers in Ipswich\, continuing to Newbury\, Newburyport\, West Newbury\, and Amesbury\, and then escorted into New Hampshire. \nFrom 1831 to 1865\, William Lloyd Garrison published The Liberator\, which was dedicated to the immediate abolition of slavery. A native of Newburyport\, he founded the influential American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Men’s and women’s anti-slavery societies formed in many of the towns of the North Shore\, a hotbed of the anti-slavery movement. \nAfternoon Enrichment Series • Included with general museum admission • Ages: Adults • Registration not required \nAbout Gordon Harris:\nGordon Harris grew up in Mississippi and has lived in Massachusetts since graduating from Millsaps College in 1971. In Ipswich\, he is the Town Historian\, the coordinator of the Ipswich Visitor Center\, a member of the Ipswich Historical Society\, and is a former chair of the Ipswich Historical Commission. His websites\, Historic Ipswich and Historic Massachusetts\, are viewed by several hundred thousand visitors to the sites each year. \n\n
