SUMMARY:Adult Lecture Series: “Spinning Toward Revolution: Growing Flax & Processing Linen in New England\, 1764-1775
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in earnest in 1764\, the importance of growing flax and processing linen in New England was one important element of revolutionary opposition to imported English textiles. Dr. Alexander will focus on women’s role in this resistance using newspapers\, spinning matches\, and extant garments. Following the talk\, join us for an opportunity to handle flax straw\, comb flax\, and examine 18th and 19th century linen survivors.  \nCelebrate #handsonhistory!  \nDr. Kimberly Alexander is on the faculty of the History Department at the   \nUniversity of New Hampshire\, where she is Director of Museum Studies and   \nSenior Lecturer. Alexander was a James Hayes Research Fellow for 2023-  \n2025\, awarded by the UNH Center for the Humanities for her Flax-to-Linen   \nProject. Before coming the UNH\, she held curatorial positions at several   \nNew England museums\, including the MIT Museum\, the Peabody Essex   \nMuseum and Strawbery Banke. Her most recent books are Treasures Afoot:   \nShoe Stories from the Georgian Era (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2018)\,  \nwhich won an Honor Award from Historic New England in 2019 and  \nFashioning the New England Family (Massachusetts Historical Society\,   \n2021).

The Wenham Museum even has them in our collection. During the 19th century\, pioneer children adopted corn husk doll making from Native American tribes in the northeast and brought them west. Make your own corn husk doll to travel with you during your day.

SUMMARY:Adult Lecture Series: Laying their Hands to the Spindle: Women’s Spinning Protests\, 1768-1770
DESCRIPTION:Women\, Spinning\, and Resistance: Stacey Fraser \nIn the years leading up to the American Revolution\, New England women played an important role in resisting British policies through their everyday lives and work. On August 31\, 1769\, forty-five women in Lexington\, Massachusetts\, gathered for a spinning protest—one of more than sixty such demonstrations held throughout New England between 1768 and 1770. By spinning wool and linen yarn together\, these women demonstrated their ability to produce the textiles needed by their families while rejecting reliance on imported British goods. \nJoin Stacey Fraser for a fascinating look at how women used their social roles\, domestic skills\, and community networks to participate in the growing resistance to British rule. Discover how these seemingly everyday acts of spinning and boycotting became powerful forms of protest in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War. \nAbout the Speaker:\nStacey Fraser is Assistant Curator at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. She recently curated an exhibition exploring Lexington’s role in the American Revolution and chaired the museum’s 50th anniversary committee. Stacey also serves on the advisory board of LexSeeHer\, a Lexington nonprofit dedicated to making women visible in history. SUMMARY:Afternoon Lecture Series: First Period Houses & Tour of the Claflin-Gerrish-Richards House
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what is on the second floor of the Claflin-Gerrish-Richards House? Join us on Friday\, October 16th\, as Ipswich Town Historian\, Gordon Harris\, gives an introduction on First Period architecture on the North Shore. Following the introduction\, we will walk through Wenham Museum’s 1662 historic house to see these architectural features in person.   \n  \nGordon Harris\, the Ipswich town historian for the past dozen years\, maintains the Historic Ipswich website and is the coordinator for the Ipswich Visitor Center. Having spent much of his working career as a carpenter\, Gordon has a special interest in the First Period houses of Essex County constructed during the first century of English settlement\, which feature exposed post-and-beam framing with large chamfered summer beams\, massive central fireplaces\, and fine paneling. Houses constructed during the last quarter of the 17th century often featured post-medieval-style overhangs\, a short-lived fashion that gave way to the familiar Georgian style we often refer to as Colonial. Gordon also enjoys vegetable gardening\, cycling\, and hiking trails in and around Ipswich.  \nEvent for Adults | Included with general museum admission
