Through the lens of the novel\, the discussion will explore what life was like for women of this time. While The Boston Girl is fictional\, many of the historical elements in the novel are based on fact\, such as the development of vacation homes for working women. Wenham’s own Iron Rail Vacation Home for Girls\, founded by Helen Clay Frick\, is one such example\, and is the subject of an exhibit at Wenham Museum now on view. \nFollowing the conversation\, Anita Diamant will sign books.  \nAbout The Boston Girl  \nAddie Baum is The Boston Girl\, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End\, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood\, Addie’s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts\, movies\, celebrity culture\, and new opportunities for women. SUMMARY:Colonial Life Scout Program
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Life with the Claflins Scout Program for Girl Scout Troops \nOffered at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. \nBrownies and Juniors will explore life in rural Colonial Massachusetts with an authentic hands-on experience in a 17th century home.  Gather ’round the hearth grinding spices\, making butter\, and learning about the family’s daily chores using colonial reproduction household tools. \nThe 3-hour program begins with a short introduction to colonial customs and dress\, followed by two 50-minute hands-on experiences through a series of learning stations in both the historic Claflin-Gerrish-Richards house and in the museum’s program space.  Learning stations include candle dipping\, schoolwork with a quill\, weights and measures with a yoke\, and traditional games of the period. Each scout will bring home a dipped candle. \nRate: $18.00 per scout (includes a special Wenham Museum badge) and $15.00 per adult. \nGroups are welcome to visit the museum galleries before or after their program.

A wealth of fact and folklore about these masters of the dark explains the natural and unnatural history of owls\, while a variety of live owls provides the focus of the presentation.
