SUMMARY:Railroads and Gloucester’s Fishing Industry
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off a new Afternoon Enrichment series for adults with historian Paul Romary\, who brings Gloucester’s 19th-century fishing story to life in surprising ways. His talk uncovers the overlooked role of the railroad in turning Gloucester into a world-renowned fishing port after the Civil War. \nWhile most accounts focus on fishermen at sea\, Romary dives into the hidden supply chains and rapid transport that carried tons of fish to market—and transformed the industry forever. \nIncluded with general museum admission • Ages: Adults • Registration not required \nAbout Paul Romary: Paul Romary volunteers at the CAM Archives and Library\, helps maintain and sail the Schooner Adventure\, and serves on the board of Backyard Growers. After careers in journalism\, financial management\, and hospital administration\, he picked up piano tuning and repair to care for “underserved” pianos at nonprofits and churches. Paul lives in downtown Gloucester with his husband\, Rev. Douglas Vooys.
