SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Accounted For
DESCRIPTION:Tracing the Lives and Labor of an Enslaved Family in 18th-Century Wenham \nIn an unassuming brown leather-bound book\, held today in the collection of the Wenham Museum\, Lieutenant Richard Dodge of Wenham Neck carefully recorded his business transactions from the 1750s through the 1770s. He also recorded the labor of the human beings he enslaved–labor that he exchanged with neighbors and family for goods and services. \nLt. Dodge’s son\, Captain Richard Dodge\, Jr.\, and his brother\, Captain Jacob Dodge\, kept similar account books in Wenham in the 1700s\, each recording the labor of the people they enslaved. For more than a year\, independent researcher James Tanzer has been working to fully transcribe these important–if unexpected–sources of early Black history in Massachusetts. \nIn this talk\, he will show how Lt. Richard Dodge’s account book offers a remarkable window into the daily laboring life of one enslaved family in 18th-century Wenham: that of Hazard and Flora and their son\, Hampshire. The fastidious entries in Lt. Dodge’s account book\, when combined with other historical sources\, help reconstruct a vivid picture of this enslaved family that labored\, worshiped\, married\, raised children\, sought freedom\, and died in Wenham. \nThe image at the top of this event listing is a photo of one of the Dodge account books documenting the labor of these enslaved people and is held in the permanent collection of the Wenham Museum. \nAbout the Brown Bag Lunch Series\nJoin us the 3rd Thursday of every month to learn about local history and culture.  Bring your own “brown bag lunch” and beverages and dessert will be provided by the museum. \nTo participate via Zoom\, please register online using the “Buy Tickets” button below.  If you plan to attend in person\, you may register in advance or drop-in on the day of the program. \nThank You to Our Sponsor\nThis program series is sponsored by the Institution for Savings. \n \n  \nPROGRAM DETAILS\n3rd Thursday of the Month\n12 – 1 p.m.\n$10 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Set at Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Our January Brown Bag Lunch program is the first in a two-part series regarding the history of enslaved people on the North Shore.  This month\, we welcome Abby Battis\, Associate Director for Collections\, from Historic Beverly. \nRemarkably\, some of the stories of Beverly’s black population have been preserved and can be found at Historic Beverly. These are stories of citizens\, black and white\, battling against the unjust system of slavery; of enslaved men fighting for freedom for our nation\, though not free themselves; of a woman using the law to emancipate her family; and of the racism that affected the lives of Beverly’s black population long after they were freed from bondage. A few of these stories can be found in Historic Beverly’s online exhibit\, “Set at Liberty: the stories of Enslaved in a small New England Town”. This exhibit presents these accounts using the archives of the Historic Beverly collection. Ms. Battis will discuss the content found in the exhibit and in the collection at Historic Beverly as well as\, how the exhibit was created. \nIn February\, we will learn about the history of an enslaved family in Wenham.  The original research into this topic will be presented by Hamilton native\, Jamey Tanzer.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Shipwrecks & the USS NH
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we welcome Cape Ann resident and scuba diver Norman “Dugie” Russell.  Dugie has explored many sunken shipwrecks located off North Shore and Cape Ann\, with the U.S.S. New Hampshire being one of the most significant. The U.S.S. New Hampshire was one of the last of the United States’ 74-gun warships\, built in 1814 and designed by the same designer of the U.S.S. Constitution. \nThe U.S.S. New Hampshire sank in 1922 near Graves Island in Manchester-by-the-Sea. During his dives to the wreckage\, Dugie recovered 4 tons of gorgeous\, nearly petrified marbleized timber and striking copper and brass fittings forged by Paul Revere & Sons in the early 1800s. \nJoin us as we learn about this history of this sunken ship and hear Dugie’s first-person account of diving and salvaging from this historic wreckage. \nDugie was one of the original founders of the Essex County Sherriff’s Search and Recovery Dive Team and is a retired court officer from the Massachusetts’ court system. \nTo participate via Zoom\, please register online using the “Buy Tickets” button below.  If you plan to attend in person\, you may register in advance or drop-in on the day of the program. \nThank You to Our Sponsor\nThis program series is sponsored by the Institution for Savings. \n \nAbout the Brown Bag Lunch Series\nJoin us the 3rd Thursday of every month to learn about local history and culture.  Bring your own “brown bag lunch” and beverages and dessert will be provided by the museum. \nPROGRAM DETAILS\n3rd Thursday of the Month\n12 – 1 p.m.\n$10 Suggested Donation
