SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Pink
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating a Century:  Pink\nWest Gallery\nIncluded with Admission\nFree for Members \nIn honor of Women’s History Month\, we’ve updated the Citizenship section of our Celebrating a Century exhibition with a new installation called Pink. \nPink is an exhibit of children’s book illustrations that tell the story of a family coming together with other community members to exercise their First Amendment right “peaceably to assemble\, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” \nOn January 21\, 2017\, millions of citizens of the United States\, and countless others around the world\, gathered to march and voice their frustrations over what they saw as encroaching danger on their human rights – the result was unprecedented in its size\, diversity\, and peaceful nature. \nIn 2022\, in celebration of the 5th anniversary of the march\, children’s book author Virginia Zimmerman\, and illustrator Mary Newell DePalma\, created Pink\, which tells the story of a child learning to knit from her grandmother so she can make her own pink hat to participate in the march. These charming\, creative\, mixed-media illustrations will be on display juxtaposed with dynamic photos of the march in Boston\, taken by professional photographer\, and Hamilton resident\, Deb Bai-Lannon. \nThe exhibit will also feature artifacts from the museum’s collection that commemorate other important eras in women’s history\, like the fight for women’s suffrage\, and the Equal Rights Amendment. \nAs always\, there will be plenty of hands-on opportunities in the gallery\, with dry-erase boards for visitors to create their own signs\, a tea party where “march planning” can take place\, and examples of knitted and crocheted materials that can be touched. \nImage caption:  Original illustration from Pink made by Mary Newell DePalma.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Accounted For
DESCRIPTION:Tracing the Lives and Labor of an Enslaved Family in 18th-Century Wenham \nIn an unassuming brown leather-bound book\, held today in the collection of the Wenham Museum\, Lieutenant Richard Dodge of Wenham Neck carefully recorded his business transactions from the 1750s through the 1770s. He also recorded the labor of the human beings he enslaved–labor that he exchanged with neighbors and family for goods and services. \nLt. Dodge’s son\, Captain Richard Dodge\, Jr.\, and his brother\, Captain Jacob Dodge\, kept similar account books in Wenham in the 1700s\, each recording the labor of the people they enslaved. For more than a year\, independent researcher James Tanzer has been working to fully transcribe these important–if unexpected–sources of early Black history in Massachusetts. \nIn this talk\, he will show how Lt. Richard Dodge’s account book offers a remarkable window into the daily laboring life of one enslaved family in 18th-century Wenham: that of Hazard and Flora and their son\, Hampshire. The fastidious entries in Lt. Dodge’s account book\, when combined with other historical sources\, help reconstruct a vivid picture of this enslaved family that labored\, worshiped\, married\, raised children\, sought freedom\, and died in Wenham. \nThe image at the top of this event listing is a photo of one of the Dodge account books documenting the labor of these enslaved people and is held in the permanent collection of the Wenham Museum. \nAbout the Brown Bag Lunch Series\nJoin us the 3rd Thursday of every month to learn about local history and culture.  Bring your own “brown bag lunch” and beverages and dessert will be provided by the museum. \nTo participate via Zoom\, please register online using the “Buy Tickets” button below.  If you plan to attend in person\, you may register in advance or drop-in on the day of the program. \nThank You to Our Sponsor\nThis program series is sponsored by the Institution for Savings. \n \n  \nPROGRAM DETAILS\n3rd Thursday of the Month\n12 – 1 p.m.\n$10 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Set at Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Our January Brown Bag Lunch program is the first in a two-part series regarding the history of enslaved people on the North Shore.  This month\, we welcome Abby Battis\, Associate Director for Collections\, from Historic Beverly. \nRemarkably\, some of the stories of Beverly’s black population have been preserved and can be found at Historic Beverly. These are stories of citizens\, black and white\, battling against the unjust system of slavery; of enslaved men fighting for freedom for our nation\, though not free themselves; of a woman using the law to emancipate her family; and of the racism that affected the lives of Beverly’s black population long after they were freed from bondage. A few of these stories can be found in Historic Beverly’s online exhibit\, “Set at Liberty: the stories of Enslaved in a small New England Town”. This exhibit presents these accounts using the archives of the Historic Beverly collection. Ms. Battis will discuss the content found in the exhibit and in the collection at Historic Beverly as well as\, how the exhibit was created. \nIn February\, we will learn about the history of an enslaved family in Wenham.  The original research into this topic will be presented by Hamilton native\, Jamey Tanzer.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Storybook Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Calling all quilters!  Do not miss the wonderful story behind one of the Wenham Museum’s most beloved quilt collections\, the Storybook Quilts.  Each storybook quilt recreates a children’s picture book.  Created by the loving and talented hands of the Common Threads Quilt Guild\, formerly of Topsfield\, Massachusetts\, these quilts have engaged and educated countless children across the North Shore.  Nancy LeGendre\, a founding member of the Common Threads Quilt Guild\, will inspire you with stories of the Guild’s generosity in making these quilts\, teaching young children\, and ultimately in giving them to the Wenham Museum where the quilts can continue to connect with children and families. \nTo participate via Zoom\, please register online using the “Buy Tickets” button below.  If you plan to attend in person\, you may register in advance or drop-in on the day of the program. \nThank You to Our Sponsor\nThis program series is sponsored by the Institution for Savings. \n \nAbout the Brown Bag Lunch Series\nJoin us the 3rd Thursday of every month to learn about local history and culture.  Bring your own “brown bag lunch” and beverages and dessert will be provided by the museum. \nPROGRAM DETAILS\n3rd Thursday of the Month\n12 – 1 p.m.\n$10 Suggested Donation
