Settled
in 1635 as part of the vast Salem Plantation, Wenham is now an elegant
residential area with beautiful rolling fields, rows of maple trees, and
rough-hewn stone walls. During the 19th century, ice from Wenham Lake
was shipped around the world and was a favorite of royalty, including
England’s Queen Victoria. The scenic drive through Wenham to Newburyport
along Route 1A is exceptional, with one charming house, garden, and town
after another.
The Exchange at the Wenham Tea House:
Originally established in 1915 by the Wenham Village Improvement Society,
the Wenham Tea House now features an independently-owned restaurant, known
as The Exchange at the Wenham Tea House, offering both lunch and afternoon
tea. The Tea House also features an outdoor playground for children, still
funded by the WVIS. The Wenham Tea House is across the street from the
Wenham Museum.
